No matter where your excursions take you, whether overseas or on the road, these tips will help keep you safe so you can enjoy your summer travel with friends and family. 1. Check for travel advisories - Before going overseas do some homework on the country you plan to visit. I never board a plane without checking the State Department’s travel advisories posted for all countries around the world. 2. Beware of local scams - Stay savvy about what local scams are common at your vacation destination with a simple Google search. 3. It’s not just what you say, but how you say it. That’s the power of paralinguistics. I speak about this often during my events. What do you sound like when you talk? Those perceived as strong speakers have a deeper tone and pitch. Their voice resonates and booms. They take their time and are deliberate with their words. They use silence and pause strategically. Most importantly they speak with conviction. They believe in what they are saying. Research shows that people with lower pitch voices are seen as stronger and confident. The Klofstad Study looked at 796 candidates during the 2012 election. It found that those candidates with lower pitch voices won more often. This is especially important for women, where at times we talk as if we are still girls rather than confident women.
In my recent interview with @mmlafleur I talk about the concept of how many people aspire to be fearless. In fact, the most common question I get asked is “How do I become fearless.” Let me first tell you that being fearless is complete bullshit. There is no such thing. You can never be void of fear. Nor should you want to. Fear serves a purpose. It’s one thing to have fear and use it effectively, and it’s a different thing to live in a constant state of fear. That’s when you have panic, that’s when you have paralysis—you’re afraid to leave a bad marriage or a job that’s not the right fit. In my work, I try to help people understand that being afraid is normal. It’s just about understanding how to manage it. When it comes to personal safety and physical conflict, many people feel like they don’t want to offend anybody. If you’re standing in a line and somebody’s uncomfortably close to you, you can turn around and look at that person and say, “Excuse me,” or get out of the line and leave. But we are often too afraid of offending others or being wrong to take action. The most important thing is to listen to your instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, you should listen to that feeling. As individuals, we have to trust that inner voice, and we often don’t.
